The three rules that actually matter

• State bans: Virginia and Washington, D.C. prohibit radar detectors in all vehicles. Police can issue a fine and confiscate the device.
• Federal commercial rule: detectors are prohibited in commercial motor vehicles rated over 10,000 lbs GVWR, in all 50 states.
• Federal property: detectors are prohibited on US military installations, whatever the host state allows.

Beyond those, a second tier of state law matters less to legality and more to how you mount the device: several states restrict objects attached to the windshield. Where that applies, mount the detector on the dashboard instead.

What happens if you are caught in a banned state

In Virginia, using a radar detector is a traffic infraction. The typical outcome is a fine plus confiscation of the device; it does not usually add license points, but policies vary by jurisdiction and a citation is still a court matter. Washington, D.C. applies a similar prohibition. If you regularly drive in either, we recommend not buying a detector at all.

Detector vs jammer — an important distinction
