Are radar detectors legal in New Zealand?

The legal position

• There is no New Zealand law banning the possession or use of a radar detector in a private vehicle.
• Windscreen-mounted devices must not obstruct your view — mount high behind the mirror or low on the dash.
• Detection is passive. Devices that transmit to interfere with police equipment are a separate matter and are not what McFlash does.
• Nothing here is a licence to speed; open-road limits still apply and are strictly enforced.

What works and what does not

• Mobile radar patrols on state highways: detectable, often with useful warning distance in open country.
• Police laser: detectable, but by the time laser hits your vehicle a reading may already exist.
• Fixed and mobile safety cameras that use vision rather than radar: not detectable by any device.
• Average-speed corridors: not detectable — your speed is calculated between two points.
