How do radar detectors work?

A radar detector is a specialised radio receiver. It listens for the specific microwave frequencies police speed guns transmit, and for the infrared pulses of laser guns, then warns you before your vehicle is measured.

Step 1: police radar transmits

A speed gun emits a microwave beam. When that beam strikes a moving vehicle, the reflection comes back at a slightly shifted frequency — the Doppler effect — and the gun converts that shift into a speed reading. Crucially, the beam spills well beyond the targeted car: it scatters off road signs, guard rails and other traffic.

Step 2: the detector hears the spill

That scatter is what a detector picks up. A superheterodyne receiver sweeps the radar bands continuously, and when energy appears on a monitored frequency the detector measures its strength and alerts. Range depends on terrain, antenna sensitivity and how much of the beam is bouncing your way — on open highway a good detector can hear radar from a mile or more; over a hill crest it may be seconds.

Step 3: you get a warning, not a shield

A detector does not stop a reading. It buys you the seconds needed to check your speedometer and settle back to the limit. That is the honest framing of what any detector — including McFlash — actually does.

Why instant-on and laser are harder

  • Instant-on (POP) radar: the officer keeps the gun in standby and triggers it only when a target is in range. The only warning you get is the officer clocking the car ahead of you — which is exactly why long-range sensitivity matters.
  • Laser (LiDAR): a tightly focused infrared beam roughly the width of a car at 1,000 feet. There is very little scatter, so a laser alert usually means you have already been measured. Detection still helps you learn where laser enforcement is used.
  • Rear and side coverage: officers frequently shoot from behind or from a cross street. 360-degree antennas catch what a front-only detector never hears.

Why false alerts happen

Automatic supermarket doors, blind-spot monitoring systems in nearby cars, and some traffic-flow sensors transmit on K-band — the same band as many speed guns.
