How to install a radar detector
Last updated August 2026 · McFlash editorial team
A detector takes about two minutes to fit, but where you put it decides how much warning you get. Here is the placement that gets the most range out of any unit.
Step-by-step
1. Pick the mounting spot
Centre of the windshield, high, just below the rear-view mirror — or on the dashboard if your state restricts windshield attachments. The detector needs a clear, unobstructed view straight down the road.
2. Keep the antenna path clear
Avoid mounting behind wiper-park zones, heated-windshield elements, metallic sun strips or the black ceramic dot matrix. Any of those attenuate the signal and can noticeably shorten range.
3. Level the unit
Aim the front face parallel to the road surface, not angled up at the sky or down at the hood. A few degrees off costs real distance on long-range Ka alerts.
4. Route the power cable
Run the cable up to the headliner, across to the A-pillar, down the pillar trim and into the 12V socket. Tuck it into the trim gaps so nothing dangles into your field of view or the airbag path.
5. Set your modes
Highway mode for open road, city mode in town to suppress K-band door-sensor noise. Set volume high enough to hear over music and road noise.
6. Verify it works
Drive a familiar stretch where you know enforcement happens. You should get band callouts with increasing signal strength as you approach, not a single random chirp.
Mistakes that kill your range
- Mounting low on the dash behind a steep windshield rake, so the beam path is blocked by the hood.
- Placing the unit behind a heated windshield grid or metallic tint — both attenuate microwave signals.
- Angling the face upward, which sends the receiver's best sensitivity into the sky.
- Leaving city mode on during highway driving, which shortens warning distance on genuine K-band radar.
- Blocking the driver's view — a citation risk in states with windshield-obstruction laws.
Moving it between vehicles
Suction mounts release cleanly, so one detector can move between a daily driver and a weekend car in seconds. If two people in your household drive separately at the same time, a multi-unit bundle is cheaper than buying twice.
